Military Service: US Marine Corps

So, what do you do and how do you do it?

DrakeWise provides high-quality video production services at extremely affordable rates.  Our parent company, DrakeWise Technologies, designs and makes custom video production equipment, props, and special effects for us and our clients.  This allows us to stay on the cutting edge of video technology and push the frontier of what is possible in cinematography.  We can then pass the savings and top end services along to our clients.  My favorite videos to create are music videos and original content for business digital marketing where I get to flex my creative expressions.

What has been the most challenging part about transitioning from military service?

There have been a great many challenges for me personally, but the one that stands out most has been seeing other veterans struggling with civilian life.  Knowing first hand the difficulties of finding veteran services and having no clue what benefits were out there for me, it always pains me to see another vet in need because they lack the right info.  A few years ago I co-founded the Veterans Resource Center in San Diego to help the local vets find the right knowledge and opportunities the needed to thrive.  After incubating it, we handed it over to a younger generation of leaders, but I still see vets in need slipping through the cracks.

Tell us how you ended up where you are in your company.

After leaving a Plasma Simulations Operator (fancy physicist) position with Fajan’s Laboratory, where I wrote code for anti-hydrogen experiments like those performed at the LHC in Cern, I founded DrakeWise Technologies.  At first, we designed smart furnishings for the home and office that allowed the user to interact with their environment through various cyber-physical means.  We took our ideas to Silicon Valley, but after talks with industry giants like Google, AWS (Amazon), Samsung, etc. we saw there was no real future for us due to limited resources and an over-saturated market.  That’s when we turned to designing and making custom video production equipment.

I’ve always been tinkering with videography, and even back in the Marines, you would always find me with a video camera in my hands.  It only seemed natural to combine my passion for videography with my background in technology.   In April of last year, I founded DrakeWise Productions in Colorado, and we started making videos for clients while implementing and testing our new tech.  Fast forward a few months and we are branching out to offer our services to the east coast starting with the DC area.

In the last 5 years, what is the greatest change you have made in your life that has made you a better person?

I’m not sure it has made me a better person, but I’m proud of the degrees I’ve earned in Math, Physics, and Chemistry.

What is the book you’ve given most as a gift? Or, what are the one or two books that have greatly influenced your life?

I must have gifted the Elegant Universe by Brian Greene to a few dozen people by now.  It is THE book that has had the greatest impact on my life (which is a whole story unto itself) and I want to share that kind of insight with others.  Specifically, it allowed me the opportunity to see my life, my existence and its place in the world, the universe, and time from the cosmic perspective.  It both terrifies me and comforts me, but regardless has been one of the biggest motivators in my life.

Honestly, why did you join the Capitol Post family? And what has been the biggest impact so far?

I’m looking forward to the community of Veterans that you just can’t find anywhere else.  Vets seem to share a certain something and are generally easier to get along with, have an amazing work ethic, and are incredibly giving.  All said and told, I’m looking forward to us all having each other’s backs and the shared mentorship we can all provide.
